Litany of St. Aloysius
February 16,1992
Br. John Raymond
St. Aloysius was born March 9, 1568 into a noble family in Italy.
In 1585 he left home to enter the Jesuits. As a Jesuit he practiced
profound recollection, great penance and tender devotion to Our
Blessed Mother, the Sacred Passion and the Holy Angels. During his
last years of theological studies in Rome St. Aloysius cared for the
sick during a plague. In this service to the sick he caught the
disease and died, a martyr of charity.Because Aloysius achieved
sanctity so quickly and died so young he is the patron saint of
youth. Noted for his great holiness he is now, from Heaven, ever
willing to help youth lead holy lives.
The great Carmelite mystic and stigmatist, St. Mary Magdalene de
Pazzi (1566-1607) had a vision of St. Aloysius in Heaven and she
stated: "The glory of Aloysius is so great in Heaven that I would
never have realized it had not Our Blessed Lord revealed it to me.
Aloysius is exalted to this height of glory because he led a deep
prayer life. Aloysius was a martyr because of his austerity. He sent
darts of love to God and now in Heaven these darts return to settle
in his heart and fill it with gladness."
