The Peace Prayer of St. Francis

Brother John Raymond

St. Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226) is well loved by all.
According to Marion Habig O.F.M. in his book "Francis of Assisi:
Writer" (The Peace Prayer), which is said not only by Catholics but
also other Christians and even non-Christians, admirably expresses
the thought and spirit of Francis, `the Man of Peace.'" He goes on
to tell us that even though this prayer is attributed to the saint
he did not actually write it. Certainly his life was the inspiration
 for it.
There is similarity to the Peace Prayer to be found in the
 "Admonitions" written by St. Francis:

Where there is Love and Wisdom, there is neither Fear nor Ignorance.
Where there is Patience and Humility, there is neither Anger nor
 Annoyance.
Where there is Poverty and Joy, there is neither Cupidity nor
 Avarice.
Where there is Peace and Contemplation, there is neither Care nor
 Restlessness.
Where there is the Fear of God to guard the dwelling, there no enemy
 can enter.
Where there is Mercy and Prudence, there is neither Excess nor
 Harshness.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, when asked to pick the opening prayer
at a United Nations Conference, chose the Peace Prayer. It is truly
 everyone's prayer!
